What happens is your master brake cylinder sends brake fluid through the hose and line network that makes up your brake system. Your brake calipers activate, causing friction between your brake pads and brake rotors. Finally, mechanical force comes down on your tires. A brake booster or brake servo multiplies that force in many cases. In the process, your brake lights activate, telling other drivers what's going on. Some Subaru sports cars even have manual transmissions, which feature clutch pedals. They let you switch gears during acceleration or slowdown.
